The Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild is a Not-for-Profit Association, incorporated in the State of Victoria, Australia. We are a member based association offering a diverse range of benefits.
We are affiliated with the International Modern Quilt Guild.
The purpose of the Guild is to develop, encourage and foster the cultivation and evolution of modern quilting through community, education and art.
We define modern quilting as fresh colours and simple patterns or traditional blocks with a modern twist, young designers and old favourites, contemporary tools and techniques. While modern quilting is steeped in quilting tradition there are no rules, offering creative freedom, accessibility, and exciting new ideas. For more details on modern quilting, go to our page What is Modern Quilting?
The aims of the MMQG are to:
- Encourage, support, share and inspire modern quilting in and around Melbourne, Victoria.
- Work with other Modern Quilt Guilds nationally and internationally and with other guilds and groups with a similar purpose.
- Encourage new quilters and other textile artists interested in non-traditional quilting projects.
- Offer educational opportunities through classes, workshops and the sharing of information.
- Support and provide opportunity for charitable or other works that provide back to the community through the use of modern quilting skills.
What does the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild do?
Members of our Guild meet for fantastic events, showing and telling, swapping, chatting, and general camaraderie. All kinds of quilting endeavors can be seen at these meetings, including machine piecing, hand quilting, and paper piecing. On the agenda are swaps and challenges, sew-alongs and tutorials for different techniques and projects, as well as special guest appearances.
We also have a very active Facebook group for our members to participate in group activities and discussions.
We quilt together to create work to enter into shows and donate to charities. We run a number of bees and swaps and an annual Quilt-A-Long.

The Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild Inc. developed from the informal group named the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild, which initially formed in 2010. During the three and a half years prior to incorporation, the group ran more than 70 events at a range of venues, including retreats and sewing bees, hosted a social media site and blog, was run by a diverse range of committee members and gained popularity beyond imagination. The group was the first international Modern Quilt Guild to start up outside of the USA.
At a meeting in 2013, the then committee sought feedback and support to formally establish a new member-based, incorporated, not-for-profit entity, the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild Inc.
