Maze & Vale Workshops

We are very excited to announce our first Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild Inc. workshops! Leslie Keating from Maze & Vale handprinted sustainable textiles has offered to run two workshops, Block Printing on Fabric and Freeform Patchwork, for members. The cost of the workshops are $55 each and will be held on 5 April at GJ’s. The Block printing workshop will be offered from 9:15am to 12:15pm and the Freeform patchwork workshop will be offered from 12:45pm to 3:45pm. The class fee for each workshop will include a materials pack. Registrations will open via trybooking.com (http://www.trybooking.com/76369) on 16 February.

Block Printing on Fabric
This class will cover the basics of creating a design suitable for block printing, how to transfer a design onto the carving block, how to carve with a lino cutter set, what paints and ink are suitable for stamping on fabric and what base cloths work best. There will be time allotted to work on a simple design, participants will then work at carving their stamps and can have a play with stamping using supplied inks and cloth (a range of cottons, linen and hemp will be provided for experimenting with the effects of different textures). Participants will take home their carved stamps as well as their samples of stamped cloth. A range of items to provide inspiration will be on hand but participants are welcome to bring their own sketches, books or other items and are also welcome to bring their own cloth or fabric projects to stamp on.

Freeform Patchwork
Learn simple techniques for creating original and stunning improvisational patchwork with this fresh approach to piecing. This class will deconstruct the rules of traditional patchwork and share carefree, easy ways to combine pieces of cloth into one-of-a-kind works of art. Participants will go home with a completed 40cm by 40cm block and a work sheet on how to turn said block into a cushion cover (if desired). A variety of designer, Japanese and handprinted fabric scraps will be supplied to choose from and participants are also welcome to bring their own fabric if they wish. Participants must bring their own sewing machine.
