It certainly was an action packed day at Saturday’s Super Sit and Sew Day, and it was our last event at our host GJ’s Discount Fabrics in Brunswick (before they move to Fairfield).
As well as our usual activities (quilting, chatting, eating), Amy got us to channel our inner artist as she guided us in a colouring activity. Using ‘colouring-in sheets’ which were designs of two recent Modern Quilt Guild‘s Block of the Month designs, we took to our pencils and crayons and coloured them in. Simple as that. Everyone interpreted the designs in a different ways and using different colours and design to produce completely different ‘quilts’. Once all were displayed, we had a really interesting discussion about design, and realised that whether we make quilts from patterns or completely improv, we are all designers!
We were very lucky to have the lovely Lara from Ink & Spindle as our guest speaker. Lara spoke about her background as a graphic designer into her foray into setting up and running textile design business (with partners Teegan, and now Caitlin). She gave a fascinating insight into the workings of her business and the challenges and rewards of screen printing by hand onto organic fabrics, for quilters and other sewists. Ink and Spindle run their workshop in Kensington, and have also just released a line for Cloud 9. Thanks Lara!
As always, our MMQG Show and Tell revealed some gems:

Also, CONGRATULATIONS to all our members whose quilts were selected to show at the Australian Modern Quilt Show in Kiama next week. No fewer than 17 quilts by MMQG members were accepted for exhibition and judging, and our MMQG correspondent will be reporting from the field next weekend!
Members are reminded that bookings are open for our next two events: Social Stitching Evening on Thursday 28 May and our next Sit and Sew Day on Saturday 13 June at GJ’s NEW LOCATION. Bookings for both events are open now!
